Following a career in the Prison Service and wanting to work with a charity, Alex joined Les Amis in 2021 as a Maintenance Assistant. Here he claims he was able to fulfil a passion for helping people in a way that upskills, inspires, and empowers others. Les Amis is the largest charity in Jersey and is committed to supporting around 100 adult Islanders with learning disabilities. Akin to a person-centred approach, Les Amis offers support in a way that meets a variety of complex and evolving needs. The aim being to offer the right support, at the right time, in the right place and from the right people.
Alex said “the ethos of Les Amis; particularly the value they place in community projects resonates with me. The practice of these values, alongside my interest in sustainability initiatives, stimulated my development to become their Facilities Manager. This role oversees the health, safety, and maintenance of the 40 properties operated by Les Amis, but also provides purposeful employment opportunities for Les Amis service users via their eco-social enterprise and Recycling Service”.
“With limited resources, charities, and smaller organisations can find themselves wanting. Consequently, a collaborative approach will help to overcome any barriers and propel like-minded groups towards a stronger community where resources are shared, and good practices can be enhanced. The JCTS is one of the first steps towards building lasting relationships within the community and making the most of what is available”.
